You must already have heard about the village Chaurikharka when booking a trek to Lukla, EBC or Gokyo but have you seen it yet? Spending a spare day in Namche Bazaar is a very important thing to do as it helps a person become more acclimated before going to places with higher altitudes. By doing this, the body can get used to the lower levels of oxygen, and thus, the danger of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is reduced. Rather than just taking rest, it would be a suitable intense training, a combination of one or two short hikes to a higher elevation and then a return to sleep at Namche.you can also spend the time getting to know the Sherpa culture, seeing the stunning mountains, and adjusting the body to the high altitudes. Will Taking this extra day to acclimatize properly increase your survival chances of a successful and enjoyable Everest trek.
Practical Tips for Acclimatization in Namche
1)Stay Hydrated
2)Eat Carbohydrate-Rich Meals
3)Sleep Low, Hike High
4) Walk Slowly & Take Breaks
5) Watch for Symptoms of Altitude Sickness
Why Acclimatization is Important
Since the oxygen percentage drops by about 38% at higher altitudes than at sea level, it forces the body to adapt in order to survive. The adaptation is a bodily process enabling the body to accommodate the higher levels of the red blood cells production and get more comfortable in lower oxygen conditions. It is removing the chance of you getting sick because of Altitude Sickness (AMS), an illness that can cause you to have headaches, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue.
The way from Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,286 ft) to Tengboche (3,860 m / 12,664 ft) is indeed one of the most fascinating and soul-nourishing parts of the Everest trek. The trail gives unforgettable views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse while you are also invited to a visit to the mountain called Tengboche Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region.
Tengboche is known as The Spiritual Heart of the Everest Region.Tengboche Monastery (Dawa Choling Gompa) Established in1916, it is the most important Buddhist center in this part of the world.Hikers can observe monks doing their daily prayers and rituals. The temple is in the middle of one of the prettiest perspectives of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.A prayer service is held every sunset, where hikers can listen to it for a spiritual pilgrimage.
The trek begins with a mild climb from Namche to a twisting path alongside the ridge. You are dealt with Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), and Thamserku (6,608 m) which are absolutely spectacular vistas.Away from the trail, there are many chortens, prayer wheels, and mani wall. After a period of approximately 2 hours, the trail makes its way through deep pine and rhododendron forests to Phunki Tenga, which is a small colony by the river.Cross a wooden bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. This place is a trekkers favorite lunch stop and hence a place to upgrade their energies for the steep climb to Tengboche. Once the trekkers make it across Phunki Tenga, the trail gets tough, which is the particular remarkable and severe section I was talking about. The path goes up the hill for 2 hours between the dense woods thick layer of rhododendron, birch, and fir trees. The higher up you go, the more and more amazing the mountain panoramas become. Here, it's important to be slow and steady to walk with short breaks.
Tengboche is the most wonderful village that is located on a hilltop and gives 360-degree views of all the mountains that surround it.
The notable Tengboche Monastery is the principal and most significant monastery in the Everest region.
The town has only some tea houses, a bakery, and a small visitor center.
The Namche Bazaar to Tengboche ascent is a scenic and culturally important part of the way to Mount Everest. Yet with the final climb being as hard as it is, the gorgeous mountain landscapes and the interior of the Tengboche Monastery that is so spiritual are the lure. And the next day, they get closer to Dingboche (4,410 m / 14,468 ft) after another night at Tengboche.
One can walk from Tengboche (3,860 m / 12,664 ft) to Dingboche (4,410 m / 14,469 ft) in no longer than 5–6 hours at amoderincline, which is rather easy. During this period of the Everest trek you can observe Breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Everest, and at the same time Furthermore, you will steadily climb from the forest to the alpine meadows. Dingboche, a high-altitude Sherpa village, is a primary stop where people acclimatize before starting their further expedition up to higher elevations.
The journey firstly goes downhill through a pretty rhododendron and pine forest. The little village of Deboche is where the Deboche Nunnery is to be found, a significant and old Buddhist site. This part has been quiet and picturesque due to which prayer flags and mani walls are found all along the way.
From Deboche, the path goes along the Imja Khola River, where a bridge hangs on threads. At Pangboche, the highest lifelong village of Sherpas in the Everest region is reachedStop by Pangboche Monastery, one of the most primitive local sanctuaries which became popular because of its historical importance to early climbers of Mount Everest. It is also a great spot to view Ama Dablam (6,812 m), the Himalayas' only near-perfect mountain. From Pangboche, the scenery is slowly changing. The first factor that diminishes is the forest and you enter the high-altitude alpine land. A tiny village of Shomare with a couple of tea houses, is often the stop-for-refreshment point for tourists. The path is rougher and more empty now, with only a little number of trees.
The trail goes through alpine meadows and yak pastures that have the farms in the middle of them with stone walls of fields. The last ascent to Dingboche is driblet by driblet, it is as steep as the mountain can be.The mercury lowers as you rise to the top and the thickness of the air decreases.
An acclimatization day in Dingboche is crucial to oscillate between altitudes and give the human organism time to adjust to the altitude before heading to Lobuche (4,940 m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). Contrary to the name "rest day," trekkers are told to take a short acclimatization hike up to higher elevations and come back to sleep at Dingboche.
19,496 feet (4,410 meters) is the altitude where oxygen has a drop in levels, over the sea level, which in turn increases the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) risk. Push yourself to acclimate as a way of preventing altitude sickness, as it enhances the capacity of your body for functioning at greater heights.
Activities that we can do during our acclimatization
1. Hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083 m / 16,676 ft) (3-4 hours round trip)
2. Explore Dingboche Village
3. Rest & Hydration
Lobuche (4,940 m)is the next stop on the trek to Everest Base Camp, which you will be almost done by then, if you take the day off to rest and stay acclimatized, you are going to be preparing better for the next leg of the trek.
A motivation-challenging yet enjoyable trek journey from Dingboche (4,410 m / 14,469 ft) to Lobuche (4,940 m / 16,207 ft) where the trekkers rise closer to the Base Camp of Everest. The nature of the trail will give you a glimpse of nature's art through rock formations, glacier moraines, the prohibition zone and the high plain. The trail will be as dense as dense clouds to see only a little part of the snow-white beauty of the Himalayas in the background of the rocky gorges, the ice masses and the stark. The trek is started by ascending the Khumbu Glacier moraine & slowly and quietly. As you do so, you will see the Dughla (Thukla) Pass, a place to rest for a while as well as the few tea houses where Tea houses are the path is of the highest quality and you can see Lhotse, Nuptse, Cholatse, and Ama Dablam.the peak of the summit offers a perfect view of the highest mountains in the world.
After Thukla, the trail is steep and dangerous, and it leads to the Everest Memorial Site. Here, you can see the stone monuments (chortens) dedicated to climbers who are missing on Everest. All that hard work is physically exhausting but the altitude is the reason why so, you can try to stop and take a break. Even as you reach Lobuche the ground is not level at times it is rocky and uneven. You head alongside the Khumbu Glacier, walking along the surreal scenes of glacial ice.
Having come to Lobuche, there are a few tea houses and a colder climate in the area.
The next day, we will walk from Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) and get to our very end JJEST (5,364 m)of the journey to the top of the world, Mount Everest.
This exciting and challenging day is in the middle of the Everest Base Camp trek. You will travel through a steep, stony field between Lobuche (4,940 m / 16,207 ft) and Gorak Shep (5,164 m / 16,942 ft) before climbing up the final mountain to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft).
The stretch consists of the Khumbu Glacier moraine, and the trail doesn’t stick to one type of rock, but is instead a medley of the rocky and the sandy. On top of Dzongla to the west, you will also reach statues and inscriptions of climbers who have lost their lives at Thukla Pass (4,830 m).Closer to your destination, the descriptive words barren and lifeless appropriately describe the territory, which is also conspicuously decorated by the Pumori (7,161 m) to the left, Nuptse (7,861 m) directly opposite, and Everest (8,849 m) in the middle.Gorak Shep is the first target, once you get there, relax a bit, then eat your lunch and finally go through Everest Base Camp.
Upon nearing the last part of the approach to EBC, the climbers should watch out for unstable rocks, glacier ice, and also the lung-busting altitude. The Khumbu glacier course is prefixed to and fro with visible ice walls and dangerous rifts. In the last part of the hike when you reach the Base Camp, you can observe colorful prayer flags, expedition tents (during climbing season), and the renowned EBC sign.Base Camp Mt. Everest located at the over 5,000 meters point provides an outstanding opportunity to watch the Khumbu Icefall which is a gruesomely risky trail necessarily traversed by Everest’s climbers to reach the summit.
When EBC is completed, we should be back at Gorak Shep before the sun sets. The way down is not as strenuous, but it can become quite exhausting due to the altitude and exhaustion. We are going to spend the night in Gorak Shep, which is the highest settlement on the Everest trail, with the selection of cheap tea houses and the sensational night view.
The following morning, a huge number of trekkers scale Kala Patthar at a height of 5,545 m to have the first sunshine on Everest and then descend to Pheriche or Pangboche.
The best thing about visiting Kala Patthar is that it is one of the most difficult and yet most rewarding portions of the journey to Everest, which allows you the opportunity to observe a beautiful panoramic view of the world’s highest peak and the surrounding mountains. After beholding the sunrise at the Kala Patthar, you will descend to Gorak Shep where you can eat breakfast before your trek to Pheriche (4,371 m / 14,340 ft).
The hike begins long before the sunrise (exact time even 4:30 AM) with headlamps and warm attire. The trail is very steep and rugged, also exerting physically, because of the high altitude. The hike you need to take lasts ahead of time for 1.5 to 2 hours and you may rest and acclimatize often. The summit has prayer flags and a viewpoint where trekkers spend 15-30 minutes before descending in addition to that.Downclimbing to Gorak Shep mountain is easier than ascent and is done in 45 minutes.
Once you have had breakfast at Gorak Shep, we walk downhill heading to Pheriche. We move the same way as we first followed the glacier through Lobuche, while the-walking the same path also takes us The trail then leads to Dughla (4,620 m) and continues down into Pheriche Valley, where the landscape becomes greener. The track meanders down after the Thukla Pass (4,830 m) past memorial chortens (stone monuments) that are raised to commemorate the climbers who lost their lives on Everest. It is the Dughla village (4,620 m) that you reach after the aforementioned pass and from that point you descend into a valley that hosts Pheriche, which becomes greener then and there. The most important thing is that Pheriche is much less windy and warmer than Gorak Shep and, therefore, it is a very convenient place to spend the night.
The next day, we”ll descend to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,286 ft), which is down to lower elevations and is subsequently filled with more oxygen and native villages of the Sherpas.
One of the longest, yet most scenic, paths to follow is the Pheriche to Namche Bazaar, going down from the top of the world to the green forests of Nepal. The trail, which is the same as the previous one, but the downward journey backpacks it, making it more quickly and easily compared to the ascent.
With a soft decline near the Imja Khola River, we launch ourselves into the adventure. After walking for 2-3 hour we get to Orsho and Somare, two the association with Ama Dablam (6,812 m) that comes with their mention. All the time we paused for a tea during our travel from today to the Pangboche which is The highest permanent Sherpa village in Khumbu region. One of The oldest Buddhist monasteries in the region that you can also pay your respect to is the Pangbo.
After Pangboche, the track meanders through the hilltop lowland valleys and goes through forests above the river valley, presenting you with scenic views.
A brief climb through the rhododendron and juniper forests will lead you to Tengboche.
The famous Tengboche Monastery is situated in Tengboche and offers an amazing view of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama DablamPassing through thick woods of pine and rhododendron, you will ultimately be on a gradual downward trail from Tengboche to Phunki Tenga. This segment is difficult but beautiful as you will be walking across the bridge that is suspended over the Dudh Koshi river. After crossing the river, there is a last climb up Kyangjuma (a small village with a teahouse). The last section to Namche Bazaar is a gradual uphill walk followed by a few flat sections. While you are moving towards Namche, you will see that the forest is back again along with the appearance of wildlife and thicker vegetation. The Namche Bazaar will be your next destination to visit with its lively atmosphere, bakery, café, and trekking lodges.
The following day, you'll come down from Namche to Lukla (2,860 m) for the ultimate trek day just before flying back to Kathmandu.
The final stretch of the Everest Base Camp trail starts from Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,286 ft) to Lukla (2,860 m / 9,383 ft) route, which is followed immediately by an aerial view of mountains and valleys back to Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft). The end of this journey will be the trekkers’ shout of joy; they have completed the whole of the Khumbu region and traveled from height to civilization. The journey winds steeply down on a path bordered by tall, ever-green trees. You will travel through suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. The road goes through Jorsalle and Monjo, your exit point from Sagarmatha National Park. After lunch at Phakding, you head out to Lukla.
The final stage entails through villages inhabited by Sherpas such as moderately sloping uphill,Ghat and Chheplung. When you get near Lukla, you can see the surroundings overgrown with dense bush and many trekkers in the area preparing for their adventure. On your arrival in Lukla, you may rest, party, and ponder a lot on this wonderful itinerary.Stay the night in Lukla before the morning flight to Kathmandu.
