Overview
Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. A vibrant and historically rich city, Kathmandu boasts the most amounts of temples, palaces and historical relics in the country, therefore, every tourist religiously visit the city during their trip to Nepal.
The legend has it, a famed meditation deity, Manjushree, brought the city to life by making it habitable by cutting down the gorge and letting the water flow out of the enclosed valley. Before he arrived, Kathmandu was supposedly under the water!
A day tour of Kathmandu city is a brief trip and can give an overview of the city’s history and lifestyle. More days are required to explore the nooks and corner of this historic place, however, a day tour is enough to summarize everything there is to know about it. You can also opt for this tour after arriving in Nepal or a day before departing. The tour will focus on history and cultural significance of predominant Hinduism and Buddhism. Therefore, most of the sites you visit will be religious or cultural sites. You can choose to relish local cuisine, such as; Newari, Thakali and Nepali, or your own choice of international cuisines.
Kathmandu city is a part of the larger Kathmandu valley. Along with Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kirtipur, it makes a grand city. It was inscribed in UNESCO Heritage Site in 2006. A popular hub among the incoming tourists since the ages, it has attracted the flow of Hippies during the 70s. Today, Jhonche and Thamel are the most popular places in Kathmandu which still resembles the milieu of the Hippie’s generation.

Ideal Time to Take a Day Tour in Kathmandu: Good weather and fewer tourists make the choice clear. Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) are the best times to tour Kathmandu as it is sunny, not particularly hot, and the probability of rainfall is low.The other favorable season is the Winter (December-February) if you prefer to have some cold weather and few crowds in the city. Besides average temperatures, Monsoon (June-August) also brings heavy rains causing the ground to be slippery and the streets to be uninhabitable. However, there are many indoor places still accessible for visits.
Things to Know About a Day Tour in Kathmandu: While you are exploring temples and other religious sites, make sure that you are dressed modestly. It is highly recommended that you have your body properly covered and that you remain barefoot when entering the temples. A camera is a wonderful choice to capture the architectural beauty and the hustle and bustle of the streets that are so full of life. As you will be spending considerable time outdoors, remember to drink water and apply sunblock. Due to the traffic in Kathmandu, it is recommended that you prepare for congestion, especially during peak hours. Use Nepali rupees to pay the entrance fees or for tips and local purchases.
A Kathmandu Day Tour is an excellent way to get the feeling of the historical, cultural, and spiritual core of Nepal. If you are visiting age-old temples, participating in local customs, or clicking lovely pictures of the Kathmandu Valley, it is quite an exciting trip indeed.
