Kyajo Ri is a small peak located in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It is surrounded by the counterparts, namely; Island Peak, Lobuche and Mera Peak. A technical peak, it requires a good crampon and ice-axing skills. The climb is a concoction of the mixed terrains, and will feel quite challenging when combined with the sheer altitude.

The mountain has a fine steep sweep of rock, almost 1,000 m high, on its East Face. The East Face is one most easily seen facets of the Kyajo Ri from Machhermo village in Gokyo. The SE ridge is protected by steep towers, with stiff rocks, though the rock seems to deteriorate further up.

The trek being from Lukla until Namche Bazaar when you reroute the trail towards Mende village. You may have to stay in a tent for over 4 days during this trip; twice at the Base Camp and Camp II and once at Camp I.

On summit day, you will waken up at 3 am, and start making you way towards the summit through the frozen lake and glaciers. You may experience a challenging Grade I scrambled over-rocks to reach the South East Col before daylight. This is where the real climbing begins! You will encounter some demanding climb up the rock wall which can be iced up. This section further up requires technical climbing skill. The route to the summit can feel extremely steep and exposed at times (between 60 and 70 degrees), where you are required to front point and use your ice-ax for long periods of time.

Sagarmatha National Park and Namche Bazaar are the highlights of this trip. You will get to experience the Sherpa lifestyle, culture and meals along with climbing one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal.

Note: Keep a grace day to ensure you climb the summit even if you fail to do so the first day because of bad weather.
